I really like the idea of this game and I wanted to love it so much. The game will likely take you around 8-10 hours to clear the 6 chapters (with additional challenge runs available on the menu) so it's definitely worth the price of admission in my books! Overall this is a fun little indie gem with a rather simple story to facilitate an interesting combat system. Sound wise the soundtrack is solid and works really well with the game as well as the sound effects being satisfying as you battle through a whole bunch of enemies. This isn't much of a detriment as I played on the standard difficulty and there is a harder one available (Maybe I'll die once on that)Īesthetically the game is delightful both on a visual and sound standpoint, everything looks great from characters to buildings to animations. I found that as the game progressed and I got to grips with the way that the characters played I became practically invincible with the end boss being a cakewalk compared to the boss in the middle of the game.

The overall difficulty of the game is not too bad so long as you upgrade a characters stats at the town (which also does a variety of things between levels (or if you have a shortcut which usually shows up prior to a boss encounter) and equip items that compliment your characters. All three generally play well with my preference being the speed based character whom I like the most in terms of play, style and just as a character. The game also adds items to the mix and different playable characters which adds a whole layer of complexity as you learn and manage different abilities and characters, one is speed based and can dodge attacks, another is a berserker that gets stronger on lower health and the other is a wall.

It's a very fun, possibly tedious to some, system that has you strategising on how to minimise damage whilst taking out enemies as you explore dungeons. The game telegraphs what your opponent is doing/trying to do so you can always manipulate what they're trying to do. These can (in most encounters) then be moved around to make a strategy to either block, set up or attack your opponent and they will do the same. You draft 6 dice each turn with you and your opponent taking them in turn and allocating them to your stats. The four stats being attack, defense, skill and speed. The game is a solid roguelite experience where you draft dice and manipulate them (And in part your opponent) in turn based combat. I've never played any of the "Aether" games however I tried the demo out after liking the look of the game and I will say that the overall game did not disappoint from that demo. Just another story of despite having a game with good aesthetics, story, characters, and ideas, the gameplay should always be a game's biggest priority. I myself haven't touched the game for a bit solely because I simply don't want to go back to the grind of continuing the story, and at the moment I plan on keeping it that way. Overall, unless the developers heavily fix balancing late-game encounters, I can't in good faith recommend this to anyone. Why put a focus on collection when you *can't* go back to previously completed levels if you miss anything? Why can't I swap items between characters who aren't relevant in certain chapters? Why give a character an interesting power-up system if they ultimately don't matter for a large part of the game? Hard to get into details without spoiling.

Every fight usually lead me to having to use every last one of my items, made more annoying by the fact the amount of gold you get per battle is almost nothing unless you've devoted your entire build towards acquiring it, which makes replacing said items all the more of a hassle.Ī few more minor criticisms are mostly nitpicks, but I'll name a few regardless.

This is aside from the fact that story reasons discourage you upgrading any more than that. While almost every one of the enemy's stats is increased by at least two, you're lucky if you managed to get your character two upgrades *period*.

Enemies you could handle at the start of the game easily enough are almost like boss battles on their own, which would be fine on its own if not for the fact leveling yourself up is extremely expensive. My biggest complaint is the difficulty spike. Despite what my playtime implies, I've made it a decent ways into the game (at least to what I assume is the midpoint) and it's gotten almost unbearable. However, all of that only applies to the first few hours of play. It has (mostly) likable characters, a fun combat system, and interesting mechanics. First things first, I have to admit I had a lot of fun with this game.
